Prescriptive Authority in New York

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses may apply for prescriptive authority for Schedule II-V controlled substances in collaboration with a physician. Prescriptions for Schedule II controlled substances must be written on official prescription forms, and there are varying limitations on refill authority.

New York State Nursing Licensure Renewal

License renewal is required through the New York State Board of Nursing every three years. No educational requirements are required for licensure. A fee of $35 per renewal period is required.

Nurse Practitioner in New York

Education
Completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program Registered by the New York State Education Department as Qualifying for Certification, Or a Program Determined by the Department to be Equivalent to a Registered Program, Which Is Designed and Conducted to Prepare Graduates to Practice as Nurse Practitioners; Applicants Must Satisfy the Pharmacotherapeutic Requirement, by Providing Documentation for the Following:
  • Completion of Not Less than Three Semester Hours, Or the Equivalent, in Pharmacotherapeutics To Include Instruction in Drug Management of Clients in the Nurse Practitioner Specialty Area and Instruction in New York State and Federal laws and Regulations Relating to Prescriptions and Record Keeping; or
