As of October 1, 205, Montana is a Nursing Licensure Compact state.

Prescriptive Authority in Montana

According to the Montana Board of Nursing - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Prescribing Practices, APRNs may apply for prescriptive authority where Schedule II controlled substances in an emergency situation. A $100 application fee is required. A three semester graduate course each in advanced pharmacology, differential diagnosis and disease management, and supervised clinical practice with pharmacological intervention are required. A $75 renewal fee is due December 31 of every even year.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Montana

APRNs in Montana include certified nurse practitioner (CNP), certified nurse midwife (CNM), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and clinical nurse specialist (CNS).

Education: Accredited graduate-level advanced nursing program

Examination: Varies for Different Certifications

Certification Required: National Certification in Advanced Nursing Specialty

Additional Information: An Active Montana Registered Nurse License Is Required for Application.

Renewal: Renewal fee is $50 per APRN specialty endorsement. Advanced practice nurses must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education during each two-year license renewal period. The majority of contact hours must be in the area of the individual’s specialized certification plus 12 contact hours of continuing education in pharmacology, pharmacotherapeutics, and/or clinical management of drug therapy if they have prescriptive authority.

Endorsement: Individuals with equivalent licensure in another state may apply for licensure through endorsement, subject to a $200 endorsement fee.
